Pat sent us amazing pictures of her flooring installation, so we decided to follow up with a few questions on her experience with buying floors online. See more pictures on our blog feature: Ohio Barn Gets Restyled with a New Floor.
How would you describe your personal decorating style?
The decorating style for this project was rustic and casual.
Tell us more about your space. What inspired you to take on this project?
Our very large barn has room for a family/rec room within. We wanted a space for our expanding family to enjoy when they are visiting our country weekend home, which is on the same property but not connected. The actual barn is 46X48 and the room, bathroom, utility room, and loft measures about 23X 24.
What criteria did you use to decide on the flooring?
The floor needed to be durable, easily cleaned, rustic, affordable, and not too difficult to install.
Did you have any concerns buying floors online? What helped you overcome them?
I did have concerns buying a floor online but the free sample pieces and the pictures online really helped. I also ordered the 6 or so planks that could be returned if we did not like them and they really allowed us to see what the actual floor would be like.
You stated that you hired a contractor to complete the flooring installation for you. How did you determine whom to use as an installer?
We had a wonderful builder in charge of the construction of the room, once the Morton barn company erected the building. We obviously just asked our builder to install the floor.
What is your favorite element of the project?
Our favorite element of the project is the warmth and beauty of the room.
What was the biggest challenge in the project?
The biggest challenge was fitting all the wood colors together so that they complimented each other. We have a pine cathedral ceiling, pine woodwork, 2 black walnut bars, and hickory cabinetry. The floor works amazingly well with all.
Best advice to others looking to renovate?
My best advice to others is to do your homework. The internet is an amazing tool. The website Houzz is so very helpful too.
