Do you ever want a good taco? Actually, what am I saying?? Of course you want a good taco. I don’t know anyone who would turn down tacos. But if you do, I strongly encourage you to reconsider denying yourself such joy… Seriously.

Puesto Mexican food

As you can imagine, we here at GoHaus L.O.V.E. tacos and Mexican food, in general. So naturally, our next Lunch & Design led us to the popular Puesto, located at The Headquarters in Seaport District.

Puesto at The Headquarters

The Headquarters at Seaport District opened its doors in 2013. A reincarnation of the historic San Diego Police Headquarters built in 1939. This venue combines several architectural styles: Spanish Revival, Mediterranean Revival, Pueblo Revival, and Classical Revival. The final result yields a beautiful backdrop for Puesto’s Mexican street food.

Why do we dig this place? Aside from the food, the design features something that we’ve been noticing in a lot of restaurants we frequent: large murals. In this case, it’s street art set amid a combination of what we consider urban industrial design and south of the border flair.

We have a real appreciation for a design that can combine colors, textures and materials seamlessly. The design team did just that with the distressed wood, bright stools, hard wood floors, and printed tabletops. The high ceiling and use of lighting (both natural and artificial) help, too.

Puesto

Puesto creates a great experience for patrons; with the food and design aesthetic, there’s an energy that exists in the space that (I believe) draws people in and keeps them coming back.

Puesto is definitely high on our list restaurant spaces to be inspired by. Here are some ideas on how to accomplish it in your own space:

  1. If you’re artistically inclined, you can make your own mural or art installation. This would definitely create uniqueness in your space without question. However, you can also buy a great print like this one from Wall Monkeys.
  2. To get more of the urban industrial look, it’s important to mix materials. For example, wood with natural finishes, metal (think table and chair legs), and concrete. Like…
    1. This leather and metal dining chair
    2. This side table that blends wood and metal
    3. This concrete table lamp or a concrete wall (like this designer created)
  3. For that south of the border vibe, look for pops of color, prints, and succulents. Some of our favorite ideas:
    1. Throw pillows with colorful prints
    2. Succulents planted in brightly colored planters
    3. Designer wood flooring for a rustic look
