Over the last several years, San Diego has evolved into a mecca for craft beer. With over 100 craft breweries in San Diego County, one of the newest to that roster is South Park Brewing Company.

This local establishment opened its doors early this year and is the third from Scot Blair, a San Diego restaurateur who is also the proprietor of Hamilton’s Tavern and Monkey Paw, two staples in San Diego’s beer community. It would be remiss of me to not also mention that South Park Brewing Company received several awards with brew master Cosimo Sorrentino at the helm. Sorrentino also oversees beer production for Monkey Paw where he earned the restaurant gold in the category of American Strong Pal Ale at Great American Beer Festival, all in his first year as head brewer.

The experience at South Park doesn’t just start and end with the beer, however. The environment screams simplicity, casual, cool, and commitment to the craft of beer making. I would even say that South Park Brewing Company is so committed to the craft that they made it a focal part of the restaurant’s design by wrapping its bar around their brew tanks.

You can tell the staff takes pride in their beer and the fresh seafood, allowing those two things to take center stage, which is just one more reason we appreciate the design choices.

Once again, a trend we’re noticing more and more: entire walls covered with one piece of art or photography. South Park Brewing used this in two separate areas of the restaurant, creating a great backdrop for patrons as they enjoy a cold glass of beer and fresh fish tacos.

Second favorite design feature: wood paneling along the bar. You could have guessed that, though 😉 The combo of colors used for each wood piece creates a visually engaging area for the space.

This new establishment to the South Park neighborhood is a great inspiration for rustic rooms or a man cave; it only needs a few simple design features to get the relaxed vibe needed.

As always, consider the purpose of your room. If it is indeed a man room you want to create, take a cue from the folks at South Park Brewing and keep your colors neutral and within the same color family. Also, embrace mixing materials such as wood and metal.

Here are some quick additions that can help you create a space inspired by this local bar & restaurant:

  1. We’d start the room off with lighter flooring, such as our Aragon luxury vinyl or Seville luxury vinyl, that way you can add darker, richer colors with the furniture and art pieces you select.
  2. Make one wall of your space a wood pallet wall, using a few different wood stains to create a similar effect to South Park’s bar.
  3. If you want to make the art of beer a more prominent aspect of your room, consider finding a cool print like this one from Graffiti Beach, also located in South Park.
  4. Also like South Park Brewing, you can go the wall mural route with a large black and white print.
